Programme overview
Ore handling, which may account for 30–60% of the total delivered price of raw materials, covers the processes of transportation, storage, feeding, washing, and/or reclaiming the valuable commodity en route to, or during, its various stages of treatment. The necessity for storage arises because different parts of mining and milling operations run at different rates — some intermittent, some continuous, some subject to frequent interruption for repair, and others essentially batch processes. In the current economic climate, improving safety and increasing efficiency in coal stockpile management is imperative.
Frequent reference will be made to historical incidents and recurring problem areas in stockpiles. Techniques for analysing and mitigating process safety hazards applicable to coal and material handling will be reviewed, with a measured approach to process safety engineering as a key aim. Exercises and group projects are used throughout to emphasise key learning points, accompanied by selected case studies offering specific scenarios to solve operational problems and optimise stockpile management.

Detailed programme outline
2-Day Essentials — Training Outline
- Objectives of bulk material handling; transport, storage, and reclamation of coal
- Stockpile design and classification of stockpile material
- Volume, mass, bulk density, moisture, and particle size distribution
- Sampling challenges, minimising stockpile sizes, and financial impacts of incorrect processing capacity
- Stockpile stability, temperature monitoring, and fire prevention essentials
- Overview of the key regulatory landscape: Mine Health and Safety Act, NEMA (including the NEMLAA 4 stockpile/tailings reclassification), and EIA requirements
- This is an orientation-level overview, not a deep technical treatment of each Act — see the 4-Day Comprehensive for full regulatory depth
- Development approval and mining rights; the National Water Act's applicability to mining
- Risk management and statutory compliance fundamentals
- Stockpile sampling and analysis essentials; open versus covered stockpiles
- Stock control and level fluctuation basics
- Condensed case study: Eskom load shedding and its operational impact on stockpile management
- Deciding whether the 4-Day Comprehensive programme is the right next step for full regulatory and technical depth
4-Day Comprehensive — Training Outline
- Introduction and background; objectives of bulk material handling
- Transport and storage of coal; coal reclamation from stockpile
